I am super excited when my long-lost best friend Dimas talked about Glen Hansard first solo album. Well, it might surprise many to know that 'Rhythm and Repose' is his debut as a solo artist. I thought it would have happened earlier. 'Once', a modern-day drama musical movie starring Glen and Marketa Irglova was a huge success. Hansard and Irglova's song 'Falling Slowly' received a 2007 Oscar for Best Original song and the soundtrack also received Grammy nomination.
It is a complete surrender to the deep intense emotions through the power in his voice managed to meet with glorious lyrics that he wrote. It feels like he has a few gears to move up in the opening tracks, ‘You Will Become’, ‘Maybe Not Tonight’, and ‘Talking with the Wolves’. This can be frustrating when you just want him to let loose and showcase the strength in his upper range. I found out the pacing, restraint, and overbearing band became the 'UH-HUH-NOT-COOL' factor from this album.
All of the songs are phenomenal but my favorites are High Hope, Bird of Sorrow and Love Don't Leave Me Waiting. The country infused ‘High Hope’ opens up the flood gates as Glen begins to grow more adventurous vocally. In 'Bird of Sorrow', he starts to utilise the power in his upper range and his usual passionate intensity develops.
Put simply, 'Rhythm and Repose' is as easy-listening wonderland and it's safe to say this album is brilliant. That said it was obviously a measured decision to engage in such introspective performances, made all the more clear by the title ‘Rhythm and Repose’. The reposed nature was completely intentional and completely successful.
